History

In regards to the city’s sweet beginnings, its heritage is traced back to the original Mexican land grand made to Stephen F. Austin. At first, it was called “Oakland Plantation” by one of the first settlers, Samuel M. Williams, because the area was rich with different species of Oak trees. In 1838, Samuel M. Williams’ brother, Nathaniel, purchased the land and they would grow corn, cotton, and sugarcane. This later became a highly social area along the Brazos River, resulting in the 1853 purchase of the Oakland Plantation by Benjamin Terry and William J. Kyle.
